Quite an interesting presentation. "Dr. Neelima Agarwal" sounds like a well-educated south Indian female with a typical south Indian English accent! She seems to be an Arts-educated female who has heroically and very courageously learned some basics of Mathematica (and hopes to keep on learning more until the going gets too tough for her). She calls herself "Dr." in the hope of being taken seriously as a professional expert by her online "students". (Certainly, her interesting talk made Me feel very interested in learning MATHEMATICA, which will be very easy for Me to learn, although My supercomputer brain has already solved EVERYTHING by Extra Sensory Perception aka ESP.) A very common MISTAKE in English GRAMMAR many INDIANS make is to say "FEW" (hardly any, almost zero) when they mean "A FEW" (some) - thus, instead of saying: it has "A FEW" (= some) applications, they will say: it has "few" applications, that is, ALMOST NO APPLICATION! To the Indian mind, "a few" is almost zero compared with Infinity - and so a few and few mean the same thing: zero. I find the Indian solecism "CALLED AS" extremely GRATING to the ear. I keep hearing Indians pronouncing v as w or f - pronouncing I LOVE YOU as "I LOU YOU" or "I LAUGH YOU", both of which sound so ridiculous and nonsensical and certainly not funny - a poor joke.

Decker met up with [Mary] Lancaster at the command center in the library.

"I'm glad you can look at it in such a coldly efficient way, Amos [Decker]," she said, a distinct frostiness in her own tone.

"How else do you want me to look at it?" he said just as bluntly.

She looked away and chewed her gum. "Forget it," she said. "I'm just having a shitty day."

"The FBI seems excited," he observed.

"Mass murderer, connected cases, the stuff you found with Debbie Watson. It's definitely upped the stakes." She paused and fiddled with some pages in front of her. "And they want to talk to you, Amos. The FBI, I mean."

He looked mildly surprised. "Why is that?"

"Foremost, because you're the one discovering all the fresh clues. But it's also clear that the killer has a personal thing with you. The message at your old home was directed at you. The coded note at Debbie's house was about you too. So the FBI wants to basically question you to see if they can get any leads from whoever might have a vendetta against you."

"And when do they want to do this?"

"Now would be a good time, actually."

Decker looked up to see a six-foot-tall, broad-shouldered man in his forties standing next to him. He was clean-shaven and fit. He seemed to be the leader of the pack, if the way the other agents were anxiously staring at him was any indication.

Decker had never seen him before. 

The man put out a hand and smiled, revealing a slight gap between his very white front teeth. "Special Agent Ross Bogart. Mr. Decker, let's find a quiet place to go over some things, if you don't mind."

"Would it matter if I did mind?"

"I know you were a cop and then a detective. You know the drill. Shall we?" Decker rose and followed the man. Another agent joined them, a woman Decker had seen before. She had a recorder in one hand and a notebook and pen in the other. A federal shield rode on her hip.

"Special agent [Ms.] Lafferty will be joining us," said Bogart.

"How about Detective Lancaster [Ms. Mary Lancaster] joining us, then?" suggested Decker. "She's been right in the middle of this, too." 

"Maybe later," Bogart said with a smile, as he held open the door and flicked on the light.

They all sat around a small table, Decker on one side, the two special agents on the other. [Ms.] Lafferty turned on her recorder and held her notebook open, looking ready to write down everything that was said in the room.

"Do they still teach shorthand with all the digital stuff they have these days?" asked Dekker, looking at her. "It seems that a recording would be one hundred percent accurate, whereas your shorthand might contain interpretations and selective nuances, of which you might not be even consciously aware, instead of what was actually said. Just a thought."

She did not seem to know how to respond to this, so she glanced at her boss.

Bogart said, "Let's start at the beginning, if you will, to help me come up to speed."

"Why don't you just let me summarize so we don't waste time?" said Decker. He didn't wait for an assent from Bogart but plunged ahead. "My family was killed sixteen months ago. The case is unsolved." He then told the FBI agents about Sebastian Leopold's being released because there was no evidence to hold him.

"And you're sure he couldn't have been the school shooter?" asked Bogart.

"Impossible. He was in jail at the time. Hours before the guy started his rampage."

"You figured out where he might have been hiding," said Bogart. "In the cafeteria. The food locker."

"I made an educated guess."

"Then you found the notebook in Debbie Watson's locker with the picture of the shooter."

"Another educated guess." 

Bogart went on, seeming not to have heard him. "Then you went to Watson's house and made the discovery of the coded message held in the musical score. And then there was the earlier message, or taunt really, that someone left on the wall of your old house, where your family was murdered. You spotted that too." Bogart paused for a moment and then said, "Aren't you going to say, 'Another educated guess'?" 

"I GUESS I don't have to now, seeing as you said it for me."

"You seem to be taking this all rather lightly. Can I ask why?"

"I'm not taking any of this lightly. That's why I'm working the case even though I'm not on the police force."

Bogart glanced at a file in front of him. "CASES, really, isn't it?"

"And if you're wondering where I was when the school shooting was happening, I was at the Second Precinct."

Bogart's brow furrowed and he looked bemusedly at Decker. "Why would you offer up an alibi in the first place? Do you think you're under suspicion somehow?" 

"If you really THINK about it, everybody's under suspicion SOMEHOW."

Decker watched as [Ms.] Lafferty wrote this down word for word.

"Are you being deliberately antagonistic, Mr. Decker?" asked Bogart politely.

"No, this is just my personality. Ask anyone who knows me. I have no filters." 

"You had an outstanding record in the police force. You and your partner."

"Former partner," Decker corrected, for he had a need for things to be precise, especially right now.

"Former partner," conceded Bogart. "But in talks with people it seems that you were the clear leader of the pair. I won't say you were the brains, because I have no desire to minimize Detective [Mary] Lancaster's contributions to your casework."

"That's very nice to hear," said Decker. "Because Mary is a good detective and works her ass off." He looked at [Ms.] Lafferty. "And if you work hard too, you might become more than a note taker for your boss. I'm sure you have the ability if you're ever given the chance to use it."

[Ms.] Lafferty flushed and set her pen down.

Bogart leaned forward. "This person seems to have a vendetta against you. Any idea who that could be?"

"If I did I would have already provided the information to the Burlington Police Department."

"We're all in this together," said Bogart, who was no longer smiling politely.

"I'm glad that you think so."

"So no one comes to mind?"

"When I talked with Leopold he said I had dissed him at the 7-Eleven. This was about a month before my family was killed. Only I never dissed anyone there. And if someone had a problem with me I would've remembered."

"Are you saying your memory is infallible?"

"I'm saying I would have remembered if someone had a problem with me."

"But all that time ago, you could have forgotten. We all miss things. And memories are inherently fallible."

"I would've remembered dissing someone at the 7-Eleven whether it was seventeen months or seventeen years ago."

"You think Leopold was lying, then?"

"I think Sebastian Leopold is not what he wants us to think he is."

"And what exactly is that?"

"Homeless and more than slightly out of his mind."

"So you're saying he's neither homeless nor out of his mind?"

"I'm saying that I think he's dangerous."

"Do you think he killed your family?"

"He couldn't personally have done it. He had an alibi for that. But I'm rethinking whether he was still involved somehow."

"So you DO think he's involved somehow. And now he's disappeared?"

"I have no proof. And even if we find him we can't charge him with what we have, which is basically nothing."

"So why do you think he's involved?"

This came from Agent [Ms.] Lafferty.

Bogart turned to her, seemingly surprised that she had uttered actual words.

Decker stared dead at her. "Because he's inexplicable [can't be explained, mysterious, such as God]. And I don't like people who are inexplicable."

But such repose [resting, lying still] was not in my nature, perhaps because I was a poet, and I was constantly nagged by the feeling that I was doing the wrong work. This was responsible for a perpetual [constant] self-criticism and all kinds of things aggravated it [made it worse]. For instance what my good chief Brown had said to us that day might be very reasonable, but it irritated and upset me.

We were summoned to his room at the end of the day. He motioned us to our seats and said, "Could you imagine a worse shock for me? Brown's thirty years in India had not been ill-spent if they had opened the eyes of Indians to the need for speaking and writing correct English! The responsibility of the English department was indeed very great. At this point Gajapathy threw us a further furious look. The chief went on for forty-five minutes; and feeling that it was time to leaven [lighten] his sermon with a little humour, added: "It would be a serious enough blunder even from a mathematics honours man! [Gopal]"

When going out I was next to Gajapathy. He looked so heavily concerned that I felt like pricking him so that he might vanish like a bubble leaving no trace behind. But I checked myself. It would be unwise: he was my senior in office, and he might give me an hour of extra work every day, or compel me to teach the history of language, of which I knew nothing. I had to bear with him till we reached the hostel gate. He kept glancing at his own shoulder, swelling with importance. He muttered: "Disgraceful! I never knew our boys were so bad.... We cannot pretend that we come out of it with flying colours...." I felt irritated and said, "Mr. Gajapathy, there are blacker sins in this world than a dropped vowel." "Why should he think the responsibility for learning is all on our side and none on his? Why does he magnify his own importance?"

"Good night," said Gajapathy and was off. I felt angry and insulted, and continued my discussion long after both Gajapathy and Brown were out of my reach.

After dinner my friends in the neighbouring rooms in the hostel dropped in as usual for light talk. They were my colleagues. One was Rangappa who taught the boys philosophy, and the other Gopal of the mathematics section. Gopal was sharp as a knife-edge where mathematical matters were concerned, but, poor fellow, he was very dumb and stupid in other matters. As a matter of fact he paid little attention to anything else. We liked him because he was a genius, and in a vague manner we understood that he was doing brilliant things in mathematics. Some day he hoped to contribute a paper on his subject which was going to revolutionize human thought and conceptions. But God knew what it was all about. All that I cared for in him was that he was an agreeable friend, who never contradicted and who patiently listened for hours, though without showing any sign of understanding. [Robot.]

To-night the talk was all about English spelling and the conference we had with Brown. I was incensed [violently angry], much to the amazement of Rangappa. "But my dear fellow, what do you think they pay you for unless it is for dotting the i's and crossing the t's?" Gopal, who had been listening without putting in a word of his own, suddenly became active.

"I don't follow you," he said.

"I said the English department existed solely for dotting the i's and crossing the t's."

"Oh!" he said, opening wide his eyes. "I never thought so. Why should you do it?" His precise literal brain refused to move [to any region] where it had no concrete facts or figures to grip. Symbols, if they entered his brain at all, entered only as mathematical symbols.

Rangappa answered: "Look here, Gopal. You have come across the expression 'Raining cats and dogs'?"

"Yes."

"Very good; wake me up too, I shall also go with you -" said Rangappa rising. I saw them off at the door. I had an alarm clock on which I could sometimes depend for giving the alarm at the set time. I had bought it years before at a junk store in Madras. It let out a shattering amount of noise. There was no way of stopping it, by pressing a button or a lever. I don't know if it had ever had such an arrangement. At first I did not know about its trouble, so that I suffered a great shock and did not know how to silence it, short of dashing it down. But one day I learnt by some sort of instinctive experiment that if I placed a heavy book like Taine's History of English Literature on its crest, it stopped shrieking.

I picked up the clock, and sat on my bed looking at it. I believe I almost addressed it: "Much depends upon you." I set it at four-thirty and lay down.

At four-thirty it shrieked my sleep away. I switched on the light, picked up Taine hurriedly, and silenced it.

I sat in my room, at the table. It was Thursday and it was a light day for me at college - only two hours of work in the afternoon, and not much preparation for that either. Pride and Prejudice for a senior class, non-detailed study, which meant just reading it to the boys. And a composition class. I sat at my table as usual after morning coffee looking over the books ranged on the table and casually turning over the pages of some exercise books. "Nothing to do. Why not write poetry? Ages since I wrote anything?" My conscience had a habit of asserting itself once in six months and reminding me that I ought to write poetry. At such moments I opened the bottommost drawer of my table and pulled out a note book of about five hundred pages, handsomely bound. I had spent nearly a week at a local press getting this done some years ago. Its smooth pages contained my most cherished thoughts on life and nature and humanity. In addition to shorter fragments that I wrote at various times on a miscellany of topics, it contained a long unfinished poem on an epic scale to which I added a few dozen lines whenever my conscience stirred in me. I always fancied that I was born for a poetic career and some day I hoped to take the world by storm with the publication. Some of the pieces were written in English and some in Tamil. (I hadn't yet made up my mind as to which language was to be enriched with my contributions to its literature, but the language was unimportant. The chief thing seemed to be the actual effort.) I turned over the pages looking at my previous writing. The last entry was several months ago, on nature. I felt satisfied with it but felt acute discomfort on realising that I had hardly done anything more than that. To-day I was going to make up for all lost time; I took out my pen, dipped it in ink, and sat hesitating. Everything was ready except a subject. What should I write about?

My wife had come in and was stealthily watching the pages over my shoulder. As I sat biting the end of my pen, she remarked from behind me: "Oh, the poetry book is out: why are you staring at a blank page?" Her interruption was always welcome. I put away my book, and said: "Sit down," dragging a stool nearer. "No, I'm going away. Write your poetry. I won't disturb you. You may forget what you wanted to write." "I have not even thought of what to write," I said. "Some day I want to fill all the pages of this book and then it will be published and read all over the world." At this she turned over the leaves of the notebook briskly and laughed. "There seem to be over a thousand pages, and you have hardly filled the first ten."

"The trouble is I have not enough subjects to write on," I confessed. She drew herself up and asked: "Let me see if you can write about me."

"A beautiful idea," I cried. "Let me see you." I sat up very attentively and looked at her keenly and fixedly like an artist or a photographer viewing his subject. I said: "Just move a little to your left please. Turn your head right. Look at me straight here. That's right.... Now I can write about you. Don't drop your lovely eyelashes so much. You make me forget my task. Ah, now, don't grin please. Very good, stay as you are and see how I write now, steady...." I drew up the notebook, ran the fountain pen hurriedly over it and filled a whole page beginning:

"She was a phantom of delight

When first she gleamed upon my sight:

A lovely apparition, sent

To be a moment's ornament."

It went on for thirty lines ending:

"And yet a spirit still, and bright

With something of an angel-light."

I constantly paused to look at her while writing, and said: "Perfect. Thank you. Now listen."

"Oh, how fast you write!" she said admiringly.

"You will also find how well I've written. Now listen," I said, and read as if to my class, slowly and deliberately, pausing to explain now and then.

"I never knew you could write so well."

"It is a pity that you have underrated me so long; but now you know better. Keep it up," I said. "And if possible don't look at the pages, say roughly between 150 and 200, in the Golden Treasury. Because someone called Wordsworth has written similar poems." This was an invitation for her to run in and fetch her copy of the Golden Treasury and turn over precisely the forbidden pages. She scoured every title and first line and at last pitched upon the original. She read it through, and said: "Aren't you ashamed to copy?"

"No," I replied. "Mine is entirely different. He had written about someone entirely different from my subject."

"I wouldn't do such a thing as copying."

"I should be ashamed to have your memory," I said. "You have had the copy of the Golden Treasury for years now, and yet you listened to my reading with gaping wonder! I wouldn't give you even two out of a hundred if you were my student." At this point our conversation was interrupted by my old clock all of a sudden. It made so much noise that it threw us into confusion till I snatched Taine and smothered it [choked it].

"Don't take it ..." I began, starting up. My daughter said: "The cat. He hasn't given me the cat." He said: "Right. I never meant to forget." Hd looked at his wife and asked: "Where is that kitten? Is it inside?"

"I don't know," the wife said. "I have too much to do to be keeping count of the cats and dogs that pass this way." He smiled at me weakly and said: "Can't get a straight answer from her, at any time of the day! There are people in this world who have rough tongues but who are soft at heart - but this lady! I look ridiculous, speaking of my wife in this manner. But why should I not? Children have taught me to speak plainly, without the varnish of the adult world. I don't care if it strikes anyone as odd." My daughter punctuated his narration with "Where is the cat?" I had the feeling that I ought to run away. So I said: "Perhaps it has gone out, he will bring it when it comes back home." He said, "Wait," and went in and looked about and returned shaking his head. "It used to be behind that tin. Forgive me, baby. I will positively get you a cat soon." My daughter looked very disappointed. So I cheered her up with a joke or two and walked out. He followed us back to our house. He seemed to feel more at home in my house than in his. He reclined in the easy chair, pulled out a book and was soon lost in study. I looked at him in surprise. "This is the dullest work I've read in the English language. How is it that it interests you so much?"

He lowered the book, removed his silver spectacles and said, "I'm not reading it. If I open a book like this and allow my eyes to rest on the lines, it helps me to do a lot of private thinking. I read very few books for any other purpose."

And I have always felt that for the future of mankind we should retain the original vision, and I'm trying a system of children's education. Just leave them alone and they will be all right. The Leave Alone System, which will make them wholesome human beings, and also help us, those who work along with them, to work off the curse of adulthood." He was seized with a fit of coughing. He recovered from it, paused, and said: "I strictly want to live according to my own plan of living and not subordinate it for anybody's sake."

BLACK SUITS YOU

I have been thinking of recording the very dramatic Prologue in BLACK SUITS YOU by Novoneel Chakraborty (Penguin Random House India) and publishing My recording as an Anchor podcast BUT I hesitate to do so because it sounds too erotic and listeners may unthinkingly assume that I am being parodied as the male protagonist in the imaginary story told in this interesting novel. There is not a single f*** word in the Prologue and it is not vulgar at all - (in My Anchor podcast #277 A 911 CALL, I did not include a sentence containing f***) - BLACK SUITS YOU is a novel published by a well-respected publisher - Penguin Random House India - but still I hesitate to pronounce words like hard-on and penis and vaginal lips that would be heard by My listeners and might give them a wrong impression about Me. Yet the Prologue is crucial to the novel and illuminates the story. So, I am in a quandary - I don't know what to do - I don't want to sound vulgar to those of My audience who are cultured and are not used to saying and hearing strong s. words. If I finally decide to record and podcast the Prologue, I won't mind at all if Anchor thinks it unpublishable, which would be a blessing in disguise for Me.

'What are you doing here?' she said.

'We need to talk, Kashti,' Anaysha said, trying hard to sound confident.

The evil smile on Kashti's face scared Anaysha.

'You must be wondering why I'm sharing my plan with you. That's because even if you know about it, you won't be able to do anything to stop it. Even if you and Kiyan are in this together, the damage has been done. The video is on the verge of going viral.'

'What I want to know is, are you really doing all this because of what you just told me or is there something else to it? Something that involves your sister.'

'Don't you bring my sister into all of this.' Kashti stood up. Her aggressive stance told Anaysha there was indeed more to the story.

'Let me know if I can be of any help,' Anaysha said, knowing she had to part on friendly terms. She took her leave. Once she was out, she spoke on her phone. Kiyan was still on the call.

'Did you hear it?'

'Yes,' Kiyan said and added, 'I was right. She was after me for a reason. What a game she played to get published. Unbelievable! Kashti's link with Tina may or may not have anything to do with this.'

Kiyan disconnected the call. Anaysha joined him on the street.

They went to Cyber Hub, where Anaysha went to office while Kiyan went back to the flat. He had the loose page of the manuscript that had been slipped into the newspaper. He kept staring at it. Kashti had done all this to become an author. How silly and dangerous at the same time, he wondered. Kiyan stared at the page in his hand without really reading it. He suddenly frowned. There was a tiny symbol at the bottom of the page that had caught his attention. And it was a symbol he had seen somewhere. He immediately Googled 'Blogspot' on his phone. The symbol matched. This meant the printout had been taken from a page of a blog, with other elements carefully removed. Somehow, maybe, the tiny symbol had escaped the person who had taken the printout and kept it in the newspaper. Kiyan started Googling certain words and phrases from the manuscript page. On the third page of the search result, he got a link to a blog titled A Girl's Diary. The blog had the entire contents of the manuscript, written as multiple posts. There were no followers except one by the name of Butterflylife. He went through the blog frantically. Every post was signed off as 'Kashti'. So it was Kashti's blog, Kiyan concluded. The last post had been a fortnight ago. It was a verse.

The moment he finished reading it, Kiyan called one of his ex-colleagues who was an ethical hacker and asked him if he could dig up any information about the blog address. Kiyan told his friend it was for his own safety. The friend told him he would try and get back to him in a day. 

Anaysha joined him in her flat in the evening. Kiyan embraced her.

'I found Kashti's blog on the Internet a few hours ago,' Kiyan said.

'She is a blogger?' Anaysha asked, breaking the embrace. 

'The entire manuscript is on the blog.'

'Oh! This is just what we needed. Perfect timing. I will be with you. And I shall stand up as your ex and tell people that the video Kashti posted was made herself. That we were in a five-year long relationship and you never ever hit me. She was after your fame. The blog with the content will be of great help.'

Kiyan kept looking at Anaysha. She shrugged.

Unlike his other videos on YouTube that I have watched, one YouTube video (published 2 y ago) shows Novoneel Chakraborty, putative author of BLACK SUITS YOU, with WHITE stubble. Of course, many males dye their white hair and white beard.

In one YouTube interview, Novoneel Chakraborty ("Sidney Sheldon of India") says that some years ago he had a violent car accident and he flew out from the car's back seat through the broken car window and fell unconscious on the road. I Googled "Novoneel Chakraborty car accident" but I could not find any mention of this car accident in which he flew out of the car window and hit the road and lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital where he remained unconscious in ICU for many hours. In an interview (uploaded on YouTube), Novoneel Chakraborty says that he was born in Silchar, Assam, India, and that his parents encouraged him a lot and that he had deep pure love for his mom. Did the dramatic car accident happen on a road in Silchar? Or did he exercise his imagination to tell an imaginative autobiography (a la fiction writer Ruskin Bond, who seems to be very popular with Indian "children", but I feel extremely bored by very childish inane children's stories about a monkey etc. - I suddenly wonder if he is the reincarnation of "late" S. REINCARNATION 

There were indeed references to reincarnation in the Old and the New Testaments.
