English Deputy Commissioner Mr Forsythe introduced Ganda Singh in eloquent terms.

Ganda Singh did not need an introduction. Everyone in the district knew him. He was a well-known patron of thugs. His men robbed with impunity and shared the proceeds with the police. His liquor stills worked in broad daylight, and even excise staff were entertained to many varieties of liquor fermented in dung heaps. Ganda Singh's hospitality was lavish. There was food and drink in plenty. For men who mattered, he even provided dusky village maidens - naive and provocatively unwilling.

Ganda Singh was the most hated man in the district, and he knew it. Wherever he went, he was accompanied by two armed men. A black leather cartridge belt charged with bullets ran across his chest from the shoulder to the hips, ending in a pouch containing a loaded revolver.

Everyone in Bhamba had seen him before. His starched turban had one end proudly plumaged above his head. His eyes were darkened with antimony and his glossy-black beard, neatly trimmed and oiled, gave him a lecherous look. He was tall and corpulent. He wore a white shirt which hung just above his knees and a pair of baggy punjabi trousers. On his feet he wore a pair of black pumps which squeaked as he walked.

Forsythe paid tributes to Ganda Singh as the pride of the district. He was glad to learn, he said, that the Sardar was proposing to contest the forthcoming elections to the Punjab Legislative Assembly. He had been nominated by the leaders of the Sikh community and had the full approval of the government.

Forsythe and Ganda Singh's party left in the evening.

Next day the residents of Bhamba were talking about Forsythe, when they were disturbed by the shouts of children and barking of dogs. This time the intruder was a large lorry with a loudspeaker fixed on the roof. After a little coughing a voice announced: 

'Residents of Bhamba, do you know that elections to the Punjab Assembly are imminent? Do you know your duty in these elections? Vote for Sardar Kartar Singh, advocate, who is a nominee of the Nationalists!'

Then Kartar Singh stepped out from the front seat. From the rear emerged a dozen young men dressed in Gandhi caps, shirts, and dhoties of coarse handspun cloth. They carried bundles of posters.

Kartar Singh had never been to Bhamba before but several villagers knew him. They had engaged him in criminal cases for exorbitant fees. Even these villagers found it difficult to recognize him. They had seen him in European dress with black coat, tie, and striped trousers. Now he was dressed in a long shirt, pyjamas, and sandals.

Kartar Singh spoke. He knew all about Ganda Singh. No one, he said, should vote for a man who trimmed his beard and drank liquor. He also warned the villagers against the insidious propaganda of the Kisans, who had no religion or morals, and who, besides wanting to share everyone's property, would share everyone's wives.

Every day strangers came to Bhamba and made speeches. The private life of Ganda Singh was no longer private. But what of that? retorted Ganda Singh's men. He was a Sikh agriculturist and what agriculturist did not drink? Kartar Singh was only a city lawyer backed by Hindu moneylenders. Where did all the money for lorries, posters and voters come from? Kartar Singh was not too prosperous a lawyer.

In spite of the slanders against each other, both the candidates agreed that the Kisan should be kept out. 

Then the Kisan came. He rode up on a mare as white as his turban and the long beard [cf. RaT] that covered the best part of his chest. It was Baba Ram Singh. Everyone in Bhamba had heard of him. He had been arrested several times in peasant movements and had spent the best part of his life in jail. All his property had been confiscated and he was homeless - yet all the homes of the countryside were open to him. People touched his feet wherever he went and mothers brought their children to be blessed by him. He was popularly known as Babaji, because of his age and piety. 

The villagers gathered round Ram Singh, kissing his stirrups and his dusty shoes. What had brought Babaji to Bhamba? He told them that he was contesting the elections to the Legislative Assembly. There was a murmur of applause. Then one villager asked him - surely the Nationalists could not put up two candidates? Kartar Singh, the lawyer, had told them that he was the Nationalist nominee. The Baba's answer chilled his audience to silence. 

'Kisan!'

Kisan? But he was a god-fearing [God-fearing] man who had spent his life serving the peasants. Traitor? But the government had put him in jail for nearly twenty years and robbed him of his property. Immoral? Why, he was like the Guru [cf. "Guru" RaT] himself. He did not drink nor trim his beard. 

Baba Ram Singh did not stay very long. He wanted their votes because he would fight for their liberation from foreigners as well as exploiting landlords. He would fight the police bullies and the corrupt administration. He did not even mention the names of his rival candidates. 

No Kisan ever came to Bhamba again. Nor did the Baba himself repeat his visit. He went alone from village to village and in his own peaceful way he blew away the might of Forsythe's government like fluffs of thistledown before a gust of wind. One day before the polling was to take place, he was arrested on a charge of making a seditious speech.

KUSUM 

Kusum was a good girl with a capital G. To Kusum being good was no effort at all. In fact, she could not help being good... she was only eighteen ... She had a string of first classes to her credit... many hours spent over books... Kusum was no trouble to her parents. She got up early and cycled to her college. She came back from college. She had no engagements. She had no distractions and she did not distract anybody.

Kusum had no use for modern fashions, nor did she have any interest in boys. She shunned sex. She had no use for make-up and cosmetics. She believed that people should be content with the skins God gave them. She believed in virtue and kindness. She believed in work and propriety. She believed that a woman's place was in the kitchen. Kusum was popular with old men and women, but young men took no notice of her. So she came to believe in the values nature had unkindly forced upon her.

On Kusum's nineteenth birthday some college girls sent her a lipstick and some rouge as a present. Kusum took this as a personal insult. She hid the things in a corner of her drawer and coldly announced that she had thrown them out of the window. She turned the face of her mirror towards the wall and decided to squash the desire to see herself.

Kusum hardly ever laughed. After her nineteenth birthday, she seldom smiled. She became more earnest, grimly earnest. She could not help it. In any case, since no man ever took notice of her, there was no point in trying to look attractive. 

Kusum's university life came to an end in April when she took her degree examination. Other girls came out of the examination hall and went on a binge with their friends and relations. Nobody came to meet Kusum and she collected her bicycle with the usual matter-of-factness. Other girls could look forward to matrimony. Kusum had nothing to look forward to - nothing but her sparsely furnished room with her mirror facing the wall and a few textbooks.

Kusum cycled home with her mind a complete void. She was alone on the road and could afford to lose herself in thinking of nothing. She took the turning home on the wrong side of the road, and before she could collect her thoughts she ran into a young hawker with a basket of oranges on the head. She fell on him and then rolled over on the road. The bicycle was on the pavement. The hawker was just a bit shaken - not hurt. His basket of oranges was all right too. He smiled pleasantly.

'Miss Sahib, you should keep to your side of the road.'

Kusum was angry and the hawker's tone made her angrier.

'Are you blind? Can't you see where you are going?' she shrieked hoarsely. 

The hawker looked around. The road was deserted. His smile became roguish.

'No, Miss Sahib, I am not blind, but I am one-eyed.' [one-eyed = kana; cf. Kanai / Kanhai / "Krishna" - no one seems to know who is "Krishna"]

He shut one of his eyes in a long, lecherous wink and made the sound of a loud kiss.

The hawker was not offended. He seemed to be enjoying the situation.

'Ass?' he questioned, lustfully winking with the other eye. 'Have you seen one?'

He held his right arm at the elbow with his left and moved it vigorously. [I could not understand this weird sentence]. Kusum was flustered - she had never been accosted before. She rushed home - rushed to her room and buried her face in a pillow.

Kusum lay buried in her pillow and her thoughts for several hours. The wrath disappeared but the picture of the rascally hawker winking and making lewd suggestions stuck in her mind. Did the hawker find her attractive?

The sun went down and the pale moonlight crept into the room and lit the bed she lay on. Kusum was thinking of the hawker - now with tenderness and regret. 'Maybe,' she said to herself, 'maybe.' She got up and opened the drawer where her lipstick and rouge lay hidden. She patted her cheeks with the rouge. She turned the face of the mirror towards her and pouted her lips to put on the lipstick. She undid her hair and shook her head to loosen it. The hair fell in profusion about her shoulders. She picked a rosebud from a vase and stuck it in her hair. She stepped back and tilted her head sideways to admire herself. 

'Mirror, mirror, on the wall,

Who is the fairest one of all?'

I have noticed a propensity among medical cheats testing eyesight not to show but to hide the computer printouts from those who pay for testing of eyesight by computer testing. This is a criminal activity and these criminal frauds should be violently beaten up by police and heavily fined and given rigorous imprisonment.

Being fed up with eye-testing cheats, I bought an ophthalmological set of lenses costing about 5000 rupees for self-testing of eyesight at home (the method of testing is very easy). Not everybody thinks of buying an ophthalmological set of lenses for self-testing. If people started buying their own ophthalmological sets of lenses for self-testing, like I did, eye-testing cheats would go out of business. I have seen Indian testers of eyesight, carrying a box of lenses and a measuring scale, standing on footpaths, who can test your eyesight quickly and give you a frame with readymade lenses (simple spherical lenses, not bifocal lenses), for 200 or 300 rupees. With My sets of + and - spherical and cylindrical lenses and a steel frame for inserting appropriate lenses (for the right eye and the left eye), I can measure both spherical and cylindrical powers and the axis of cylindrical lens (there is a short straight line at the rim of a cylindrical lens that gives the axis in degrees) appropriate for each eye. (The measurements are very easy.) 

Don't bother too much about having to look at letters 20 feet or 6 meters away from you or having to use a mirror to reduce the distance to 10 feet or 3 meters - you can just hang a calendar on the wall some distance from you and look at the big and small letters and words and dates on the calendar, using different lenses to find out which lenses give you the clearest vision. As simple as that.

I strongly recommend that people SELF-TEST their eyesight at home by using a BOX of spherical and cylindrical lenses that f. eye doctors (or "optometrists" or "ophthalmologists") use, which people can ALSO use - the BOX of lenses cost about 5000 rupees a few years ago - 50 guys can COLLECTIVELY buy the set for their common use if each guy contributes 100 rupees (50 × 100 rupees = 5000 rupees) - 100 guys can collectively buy the set if each guy contributes 50 rupees (100 × 50 rupees = 5000 rupees) - of course One guy like Me can singly buy the set of lenses if He pays 5000 rupees Himself (as I did), fed up with eye-testing NAZI CHEATS. Recently, I got My eyesight tested by a NAZI MALE CHEAT who gave Me WRONG VALUES of bifocal powers for right eye and left eye because after I got glasses made with the powers prescribed by the Nazi cheat whom I used to trust a lot, I DID NOT GET clear near vision and distant vision for both eyes. I wondered what on earth was the matter. I opened My box of lenses and tested both My right eye and My left eye for near and distant vision and then I self-prescribed proper lenses for Right and Left eyes and with the new glasses made according to My own prescription, I could read distant words and letters (distant vision) and could see print (near vision) quite well. Still, I also consulted another male "eye doctor" who also turned out to be another NAZI MALE CHEAT who ALSO prescribed WRONG GLASSES. Finally, I decided to try a last and final (female) eye doctor. She FIRST asked Me WHEN I had made the glasses I was wearing. "RECENTLY," I told her. Then she tested My eyes by telling Me to read distant big and small letters (distant vision) which I did correctly and then she told Me to read printed words on a printed chart held near My eyes (near vision) which also I read easily and correctly. "Your glasses are OK," she told Me. Then she tested My eyes with a God-damned computer (probably connected ONLINE with goddam computers of Nazi "super cheats" super idiots Peter and Mamoni and their gang of idiotic Nazis worldwide) and put the computer printout in My file. She told Me: "The glasses you are wearing are OK." She did not prescribe any fresh lenses. I thanked her very much. Just before I left her chamber (there was a female attendant in her chamber, tension nahi lene ka यानि tension नहीं लेने का), I told the sweet s. thing that I was given a Ph. D. scholarship by the biology department of a (top) American university (UIUC), and that I had self-prescribed the glasses I was wearing after self-testing My eyes with My own box of lenses at home. The sweet s. thing looked shocked and stunned and tested the lenses in My spectacles and somehow managed to recover from her shock. I thanked her again and left. Seemed like the surprise twist at the end of a short story by "O. Henry" or "Saki". Read interesting and helpful books on English composition, such as SHEFTER'S GUIDE TO BETTER COMPOSITIONS by Harry Shefter (who was Professor of English at New York University), published by Simon & Schuster. As I listened to this motivational conversation between sisters (clones with the same voice?) Ms. Abbie Emmons and Ms. K. A. Emmons, I had this sensational idea: they could use a free speech-to-text app (Otter or Live Transcribe etc.) to transcribe their conversations in this and the previous motivational videos and self-publish the texts in a book! They could also include MORE texts from their other video or audio talks on YouTube miraculously transcribed by a speech-to-text app. SEVERAL YouTuber girls can SHARE the cost of printing and JOINTLY publish their self-selected collection of their own transcribed texts in a BOOK!

All other YouTubers can also select some of their talks on YouTube (in English, Hindi, Bengali, etc.) and use a free speech-to-text app (downloaded from Play Store) to transcribe their talks and SELF-PUBLISH the selected texts as printed books! In India, self-publishing is EASY because there are thousands of small offset owners who would be glad to print any number of copies at LOW COST.
