A clear and interesting summary of the play. In some ways, in Stephen Dedalus, Joyce has reproduced the character of Dr. Stockman in Ibsen's play, An Enemy of the People. The doctor is a medical officer in a small town who, discovering the town's water supply is contaminated, elects to suffer the violent temper of the people rather than compromise his principles and conceal the danger.
