I have a knack for buying novels which I may not understand on a FIRST reading (though I may underline a lot of sentences I believe to be important sentences in the novel) but on a second or later reading suddenly it makes a lot of sense! The clue to understanding top quality fiction - whether "literature classics" or "modern" fiction - is to realize that KSG is always The Central Figure. I read the novel AWAKEN again today, hoping to understand the novel if I could, which seemed at first to be totally incomprehensible. Then I realized that the novel is about Heaven and Hell and Immortality and Eternal Life and the central role of KSG when I rapidly skimmed through the novel and focused on specific relevant sentences instead of looking at everything:

We should focus on John Hayden (parody of KSG?), Ms. Pierce Oliviera (?) & Underworld (Hell).
